Job Description

Job Title: Call Taker – Non-Emergency Ambulance Control
Location: Derry / Londonderry
Salary: Band 3 – £24,071 per annum / £12.31 per hour
Contract: Temporary – 6 months, with potential for extension
Hours: Full time, 37.5 hours per week, shift pattern covering Mon–Fri 7am–12am, Sat/Sun 8am–8pm

On behalf of our client, Apple Recruitment Services are seeking to recruit a Call Taker to join the Non-Emergency Ambulance Control team in Derry/Londonderry. This vital role is ideal for those with excellent communication and IT skills who can work well under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

About the Role

As a Call Taker, you will be responsible for handling and processing all non-emergency calls across Northern Ireland. You will work as part of a busy team using Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Integrated Command and Control Systems (ICCS) to ensure appropriate and timely transport responses for patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and log patient transport requests via ICCS and CAD systems

  • Communicate with ambulance crews and external stakeholders using radio and phone

  • Liaise with medical professionals, hospital wards, and surgeries to coordinate transport

  • Support with the planning and allocation of patient journeys

  • Assist during major incidents and undertake Control Officer duties as required

  • Maintain accurate records and ensure systems are updated in line with procedures

Essential Criteria

  • EITHER:

    • Five GCSEs (Grade C or above) including English + at least 1 year of experience in a call centre or customer-focused role

    • OR: Minimum 2 years’ relevant experience in a similar environment

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)

  • Willingness and ability to work shifts, including weekends

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

  • Ability to prioritise tasks and work independently or as part of a team

Desirable Criteria

  • Knowledge of medical terminology
