Job Description

Job Title: Healthcare Science Assistant (Band 3)

Location: Enniskillen

Duration: Temporary 

Hours: 37.5 hours per week

Working Pattern: Initially Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm (some weekend work may be required)

Apple Recruitment are recruiting on behalf of our public sector client for a Healthcare Science Assistant (Band 3) 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare and process laboratory samples for analysis in accordance with laboratory procedures.
  • Undertake routine laboratory procedures and manual laboratory testing.
  • Support specimen reception and prioritise urgent samples in line with laboratory requirements.
  • Maintain accurate patient and laboratory records using laboratory information systems.
  • Prepare, package and dispatch samples to referral laboratories.
  • Operate and carry out routine maintenance checks on laboratory equipment.
  • Assist with laboratory stock control, cleaning, decontamination and waste disposal procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory Standard Operating Procedures, Health & Safety policies and GDPR requirements.
  • Support new members of staff during induction and training.
  • Participate in weekend, bank holiday and extended working rotas as required.

About You

The successful candidate will be organised, reliable and able to work effectively in a busy laboratory environment. You will have strong communication skills, excellent attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

 

Essential Criteria

Applicants must have:

  • 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) including English Language and one Science subject (Grades A–C or equivalent)

OR

  • 2 years’ relevant laboratory experience working in a hospital laboratory.

Applicants must also:

  • Hold the IBMS Certificate of Achievement Part I, or be willing to achieve this within 18 months of employment by completing the Institute of Biomedical Science Support Staff Training Portfolio.
  • Awareness of Health & Safety within a medical laboratory environment.
  • Awareness and knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  • Good interpersonal and team working skills.
  • Understanding of confidentiality.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work systematically and under pressure in a busy environment.
