Job Description

Job Title: Mechanical Engineering technician

Location: Belfast

Salary: £19.72 p/H

Hours: 36.25 Monday – Friday

Job Summary

 

 

MAIN PURPOSE

 

To work as a Mechanical Engineering technician as part of the Fleet Mechanical & Engineering teams within the three regional workshops to ensure service delivery of all specialist operational equipment and vehicles is met at all times.

 

The Mechanical Engineering Technician (MET) is responsible for the inspection, diagnostics, planned maintenance, emergency repair, bodywork, coach building and modification to all vehicles and equipment within the NIFRS fleet of Vehicles and Operational equipment. The MET will be expected to work across differing trade disciplines in carrying out their role.

 

To participate in the Regional Standby Rota to facilitate an effective support network to ensure operational resilience is maintained out of hours. This involves carrying out the emergency repair of vehicles and equipment and vehicle recovery for operational incidents on a 24/7 basis.

 

To contribute as an integral member of the Fleet & Engineering team to support the vision and mission of NIFRS as outlined below:

 

 

 

Summary of Responsibilities:

 

Asset and Services Management

 

1. Responsible for the repair, maintenance, modification and servicing of all NIFRS emergency response fire vehicles and supporting equipment to standards defined in legislation and best practice.

 

2. Responsible for diagnosis of faults, carrying out repairs and in depth overhauls on a wide range of specialist vehicles, operational equipment and components.

 

3. To assist other trades within Fleet & Engineering services and the communication departments, where their skill set is more applicable to affect that repair, including all operational equipment.

 

4. To participate in the Regional Engineering on call Rota to facilitate an effective support network to ensure operational resilience is maintained out of hours. Whilst on call the MET will be expected to make all repair decisions unsupervised on all aspects of the vehicle and equipment repair.

 

5. Responsible for carrying out PSV/MOT Inspection to all blue light vehicles to the standard laid down within Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and the UK National Fire Chief Council utilising NIFRS exemption and “signing” the vehicle as safe to be on the road.

 

6. Responsible for carrying out body repairs and modifications on the specialist firefighting appliance bodywork to include fabrication of stowage parts using specialist engineering tools. Including guillotines, formers, benders and paint sprayers.

 

7. Responsible for the repairing, maintaining & inspecting all electrical & electronic circuits and/or equipment using the latest computer technology to diagnose faults down to circuit board level. To inspect and repair all 110v and 240v on board electronic

systems and carry out electrical conditioning inspection reports and PAT testing on all mains electrical circuits on the fleet.

 

8. Responsible for carrying out technical welding repairs and the design and fabrication of parts and engineering solutions using MIG, TIG, ARC, gas and specialist plastic welding across a broad range of vehicles and equipment.

 

9. Responsible for carrying out inspections, repairs and servicing on hydraulic systems and changing high pressure hoses that are time bound on specialist firefighting appliances, platforms and equipment.

 

10. To carry out repairs in adverse conditions across the region including road side repairs and giving direct support at the scene of operational incidents. Also be prepared to work at heights (up to 42m) whilst repairing specialist Aerial appliances.

 

 

Person Specification

 

 

Applicants must provide evidence by the closing date for application that they meet the following essential criteria:

 

 

Essential/ Desirable

 

· Possess a certified level 3 trade qualification in Vehicle Repair and Maintenance.

AND

· Have at least two years’ post apprentice experience working in a trade role in their area of expertise which includes heavy vehicle.

· Can demonstrate experience in plant mechanics and light vehicle repair.

· Level 3 qualification in vehicle system repair.

· Competent in the use of IT software and computer systems.

· Competent in the use of a Management Information System (MIS) for record keeping on repair data.

Other Requirements

Possess a full, current UK driving licence Category B which enables the post holder to fulfil the full requirements of the role.

 

Desirable

· Current UK category B+E driving licence.

· Current UK category C driving licence

· Hold relevant welding certificates.

· Experience and knowledge in pumping gear, coachwork, electrics, hydraulics, mechanical.
