About the Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Hybrid Heating Technical Lead to play a key role in the successful delivery of a large-scale, Northern Ireland-wide hybrid heating trial.
Northern Ireland’s gas Distribution Network Operators are undertaking a major research programme to explore the household decarbonisation and energy system benefits of hybrid heat pumps. This ambitious trial—spanning 100+ homes between 2026 and 2028—will generate critical insights to inform the future of low-carbon heating.
As the technical lead, you will provide expert technical advice and support across all aspects of the trial, engaging directly with participating homeowners, installation partners, and monitoring providers. You will be responsible for reviewing installer reports, interpreting operational and monitoring data to generate key learnings, and ensuring that monitoring systems are functioning effectively with minimal disruption.
This is a high-impact role where you will act as a central technical authority—supporting delivery, resolving issues, and contributing to detailed trial performance reporting. Beyond 2028, you will continue to support wider low-carbon heating and energy transition projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Review and assess the suitability of potential trial participants through analysis of register of interest forms and direct engagement
- Act as the primary technical interface with installation and monitoring partners, challenging and resolving technical issues while ensuring adherence to agreed specifications
- Provide technical assurance across the trial, including oversight of installation quality, system configuration, and consistency of hybrid heat pump performance across homes
- Regularly review and interpret monitoring data, identifying issues as they arise and implementing corrective actions to minimise disruption
- Troubleshoot system and data issues, ensuring monitoring continuity and reliability
- Support the Project Manager and independent academic evaluator by providing technical context, validating outputs, and interpreting operational and usage data
- Contribute to the development of detailed annual performance reports and trial learnings
- Support the administration and allocation of installation grants to trial participants
- Engage with participants on an ongoing basis, conducting surveys, addressing queries, and capturing engagement data for reporting
- Respond to heating system-related queries from internal and external stakeholders
What We’re Looking For
- Strong technical expertise in heating systems, with knowledge of hybrid heat pumps or low-carbon heating technologies highly desirable
- Experience interpreting technical, operational, or monitoring data and translating this into actionable insights
- Proven ability to work with contractors, installers, and technical delivery partners
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a proactive approach to identifying and resolving issues
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage confidently with both technical and non-technical audiences, including homeowners
- Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders
- A collaborative mindset, with a focus on continuous improvement and high-quality delivery
Benefits You’ll Love
- Enhanced contributory pension
- Free life assurance “Give As You Earn” charity scheme
- Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
- Enhanced sick pay (qualifying staff) 20 days annual leave + 11 bank holidays + up to 5 additional days for long service
- Free onsite parking Dedicated health & wellbeing support
- Cycle to Work Scheme
