Senior Internal Auditor
Location: Belfast, Northern Ireland Salary: £35,000 – £42,000 per annum (depending on experience) Permanent, Full-Time, 37 Hours per Week
Apple Recruitment is delighted to be recruiting for a Senior Internal Auditor on behalf of a well-established and highly respected organisation based in Belfast.
This is a permanent, office-based position offering an excellent opportunity for an experienced internal audit professional to join a successful organisation operating within a regulated environment.
Working Hours
- Monday to Thursday: 8.30am to 5.00pm
- Friday: 8.30am to 4.30pm
- 37 hours per week
The Role
Reporting to the Internal Audit Manager, the Senior Internal Auditor will support the delivery of a professional, risk-based internal audit service across the organisation.
The successful candidate will conduct internal audit assignments, provide objective analysis and recommendations, support the delivery of the annual audit plan, and contribute to the ongoing development of risk management and governance frameworks.
This position offers the opportunity to play a key role in strengthening controls, enhancing compliance, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the business.
Key Responsibilities
1. Plan and deliver internal audit assignments in line with the approved annual audit plan and professional standards.
2. Undertake risk-based testing and evaluate the effectiveness of internal controls and business processes.
3. Identify control weaknesses, inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement.
4. Prepare high-quality audit working papers and draft audit reports containing clear findings and practical recommendations.
5. Build positive working relationships with managers and stakeholders across the organisation.
6. Support the monitoring and follow-up of agreed management actions and audit recommendations.
7. Assist in the development of annual internal audit plans.
8. Maintain awareness of developments in internal audit, risk management and relevant regulatory requirements.
9. Liaise with external auditors and other assurance providers where required.
10. Support risk management activities, including reviewing corporate and departmental risk registers.
11. Assist with periodic risk reporting and assurance activities.
About You
Essential Criteria
- Degree (or equivalent qualification) in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline.
- Professional accountancy or internal audit qualification (ACCA, ACA, CPA, CIA or equivalent), or actively working towards qualification.
- Minimum of three years' experience within an internal audit environment.
- Experience producing audit working papers and audit reports to a professional standard.
- Sound knowledge of internal audit principles, standards and methodologies.
- Strong understanding of risk management, governance and internal control frameworks.
- Working knowledge of regulatory and compliance requirements.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to present audit findings clearly and professionally.
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills.
- High levels of integrity, professionalism and ethical conduct.
Desirable Criteria
- Additional professional qualifications such as CISA or a related certification.
- Experience working within a regulated industry.
- Experience within utilities, infrastructure or energy-related sectors.
